Slumdog Millionaire
December 1, 2008
Just got back from this at the Angelika tonight, and it was packed. Some of you guys may have to wait. James, I know you’ve got it in Chicago.
They use Sigur Ros on the trailer — and like it did for Children of Men, it signals the arrival of a masterpiece. Same song, too. There’s magic in it. Some of the same magic is in this movie.
Danny Boyle did something remarkable with this one.
3 a.m., and I just keep replaying it in my head…
Tim Hamilton
November 28, 2008An Iowa boy on the come-up these past few years. It made good (and easy) copy for men’s fashion rags fixated on some idyllic vision of “American” style. Cedar Rapids? To NYC, and selling at Bergdorf’s? A success story through and through…
Tim’s been shrugging off the “American”-ness of his designs and the constant references to his Midwestern upbringing. An honest move. If only they knew what the majority of Iowans are actually wearing.
I think they picture Steinbeck-ian characters dressed to the farmer’s nines, or Kerouac types pushing a comb through their hair and laughing as they ditch a hot car on some old dirt road.
I’m not sure where North Face, baggy collegiate sweats and UGG boots would fit into that romantic image.
I visited his sample sale last week on the L.E.S. and got talked into the blue leather he wears in the top picture (but at a great price). Chatted with his sister, too. Another sister cuts at Buzz in Iowa City to this day. For context: Shannon, the guitarist from Innocence Broken cut there until about a year ago. Speaking of which.
The Hold Steady Stay Positive
November 28, 2008
‘There’s gonna come a time when the true scene leaders / forget where they differ and get Big Picture / ‘Cause the kids at the shows, they’ll have kids of their own…’
The Hold Steady’s new video for Stay Positive. Directed by Jake Davis and shot on the streets of NYC.
Beards
November 27, 2008Sometimes, I feel like every last one of my old friends moved out to Colorado and grew beards.
Some of you didn’t even go that far to do it. I wish I could join you. I’ve tried, half-heartedly and with very little hope.
It’s the look of a man coming to a certain realization, moving towards a better understanding of himself and his place in the world. It’s a look of a man in repose. At the same time, it shows a man not afraid of a little hard work, especially that which takes place in the Great Outdoors.
LIke the late night hosts, who took their writer’s strike time-off to reinvent themselves, I want to disappear for a week or two and come back with a full face of hair.
Maybe I could do it up in Maine.

A year in the life, from autumn to autumn.

Wheat - Don’t I Hold You
November 18, 2008
Sometimes you screw up with a girl, totally and completely. Then, later, you remember how much she meant and how wrong it all was.
Later still, a song reappears. One you’ve heard before but, suddenly, the words are front and center. Like it’s her, talking right to you.
it hits you while you’re waiting for the train or walking to work and you’re floored.
Even if you don’t know the feeling (and I imagine I might be alone in the company of the real gentlemen of the 319) this one’s still a nice tune.
I hope it doesn’t mean as much to you as it suddenly means to me.
Revisited: Mr. Jonze, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Koston and the rest
November 16, 2008
“You gotta decide which god you’re gonna worship, man. It’s, like, you can either complain or you can skate. You’re like a hypochondriac, and you’re the worst kind of hypochondriac. You’re a hypochondriac in denial…”
“What’s up with your footage?”
“…what’d you say?”
