Babysitters

August 28, 2009

Theresa and I recently sold the one car I’ve ever owned. When I cleaned it out I found this pic in the glove box from when Tim and I worked at this day care in like 2001-02. I remembered how good he is with kids.

I was cruising a new favorite mp3 blog (NEVVER.com – a perfect one-track-for-one-image concept) when this one caught me by total surprise.

It’s a little LCD Soundsystem, a little garage-rock, catchy in an off-kilter way, danceable, paranoid and weird. This track, “My Car Is Haunted,” sounds like they’re barreling down the road with Hunter S. Thompson, completely loaded, riding the track till the wheels come off.

If you’re into it, check their Myspace for more. Out of the tracks you can stream there, my personal pick goes to ‘Waking Up Weird.’ But best description of a track? That’s ‘War Bells’, hands down:

I wrote this song after I had a badass dream about winning a war against androids. I think it will really pull people together when it happens, although the years of crushing servitude preceding it will be really shitty for our grandchildren. Anyhow, this song is about the weird, optimistic morning after, smelling like burning plastic, drinking in the street, etc. I imagined it would be a nice time to be alive.

Wanted: Sick or Pregnant Teachers

August 24, 2009

About two and half months ago I quit my job, said some good-byes, packed up my stuff, and schlepped my belongings across the country.  It was strange.  As I sat in my sixteen foot truck with my car attached to a trailer I felt….nothing.  Nothing for the last three years.  It was as if it never happened or possibly a memory.  And as I drove out of the city for the last time with BreeAnn in the passenger seat, it was almost like I was driving through my childhood town and saying things like, “That’s where I used to get tea”, “See that mountain over there?  I’ve climbed that”, or “Hey, my sister lives right over there”.  Finally, when the city had vanished, the skyline was out of view, and it was just me and the road, it just felt like I was driving home after a long day at work.  There is the idea that if a person dies and they meet God, say 1000 years later, that they will have not known any time had passed.  It is like waking up from a deep sleep where it is night when you go to sleep and eight hours later it is light and you have known nothing in between.  In many ways I feel like I never left Iowa.  Like life is continuing on where it left off and Arizona was some sort of dream.

Currently I am really enjoying living in Des Moines.  I have made better friends here in the last couple months then I have had in the last few years.  I also have met up with some old ones.  These folks are pretty sweet.  Some of them live in a house with an open door policy.  They never lock it.  Recently they even got their 42 inch tv stolen.  One guy that works for a t-shirt company made about 10 shirts reading “Lost: tv. 42 inches. Flat panel. Black.” These folks have a “soup” night where anyone can come and enjoy a free meal.  Usually around 30 show up.  They even have started a community garden in a pretty seedy area, and last night had a canning pary and made salsa.  I love being a part of something.  A community.

Today I’m going to apply for five subbing positions around the area.  The job thing didn’t happen for me for the fall, which brings a different set of stresses.  I won’t have to plan for each day and I can leave my work at work.  Nice.  But money stuff gets me worried.  I know I’ll get by, but I don’t want to just get. by.  I guess I’ll have more of an understanding of what my life looks like financially in a month or so.  Another blessing in my life is that I was offered a part time assistant youth position at Zion, where BreeAnn and I go to church.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I hope all is well with all of you guys.  I continue to check this site almost daily, so I apologize for the rarity of my posts.  You guys are a blessing to my life.  Please feel free to stay at my place if you’re ever in the Des Moines area or just driving thr0ugh. On a similar note:  Titus showed up at my house at 8:30am about a week ago.

Update/thoughts on the 5k…

I ran, didn’t do as well as I had hoped, in the top half of the bottom half of that makes a little sense, I totally have the racing bug, doing another race in Golden in October, Bryan i expect to see you here for that one, Stetsel you too, sprint triathalon by the second baby’s arrival, it was really touching to see everyone behind the fight against aids, the chief sponsor was a lube company which is funny, shorter the shorts faster the runner… and i just got me some Patagonia baggies (pretty short but not gross as long as you have the legs to pull them off… and boy do i ever have the legs) Caleb, these are supposed to be the cat’s meow when it comes to comfy utility shorts since you are kind of the resident KTG fashion advisor, finally best race pump up songs Rihanna – Umbrella (would you expect anything but girl pop from me?) Dogwood – More Than Conquerers (makes me think of you Andy, first saw them in the youth group room @ your church)

Hats off to James for keeping this shizzle going with the last post, sorry for the absence of posts from me.

Is Social Media a Fad?

This may change your answer:

Hello?

August 17, 2009

Where has anyone been even? 12 days since a post? Gay.

Anyways, this weekend I saw District 9 and thought it was pretty sweet. Has anyone else seen/heard of it? What are your opinions on the movie? Here is a link to the trailers and stuff on Apple’s site.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/district9/

Anyone else seen any recent releases that they liked? I saw 500 Days of Summer a couple of weeks ago as well and LOVED it. So check that out as well. Caleb, I know you posted something about it a while back…did you end up seeing it?

Nehemiah

August 5, 2009

I haven’t listened to much metal/hardcore in the last couple years, but I am still so nostalgic for those show trades in the old days between IA and MN. There was a lot I had to discover on my own before I hit high school and met some of you who shared a bit of musical common interest.

I don’t remember who it was that introduced me to that first Nehemiah EP, but I stumbled on this clip last night and it took me back, fast. Upon This Shallow Blood…before I knew any of the influences the kids were working from, everything from Harvest to Opeth, I heard this. It wasn’t anything new, but it was to me.

“It’s a pit call. FOR YOU.”
