Don’t start a fire, I won’t show up…
September 29, 2007So I found out already that I’m not able to be a firefighter… Reason being, my big speeding ticket I got a month ago. Because of that, I will not even be considered for insurance reasons. One ticket.. pretty sad huh? I’m really pretty bummed about it, not to say I had my hopes up, but it seems like such a fitting job for me. I’m not sure why a speeding ticket would be a bad thing for a firefighter. You think it’d be a great thing, it proves I have lots of practice driving fast!!! Moral of the story, don’t burn down a building for me to come hang out, because I will not show up… yet… Actually, I plan to wear a cape and a mask and arrive at all the fires in Waterloo and put them out before the stations just to prove them wrong. I’ll make my own truck and fight fires on my own until they hire me… I’ll call myself “fire not in my neighborhood guy”

September 27, 2007First of all much props to the creator of this website,Bryan (or anyone else), for having the incite and ambition to start this whole thing. I haven’t even begun to experience life or wisdom, but I know enough to say that keeping in touch and encouraging one another is so important. I miss everyone so much, from Hy-Vee Chinese, talking about the big “M” at Subway, tricking Nick’s dog into thinking Mama was home, drinking Jones, having our amps turned off at the Boat House, and ordering cookie dough from a very enthusiastic salesman. I look through my photo albums and yearbooks, think back and can’t help but wonder if those were some of my best years.
The quick catch up in my life…..After graduating from Iowa (go Hawks) in 2006 I took a job in Gilbert, Arizona teaching sixth grade. It is the hardest thing I’ve done, but possibly the most rewarding. I get to try to be that positive role model, because I know for some kids the best part of their day is school. I hope I make that difference. My sister ended up moving down here as well after accepting a job at ASU as an Eglish instructor. Yeah, we’re pretty tight. I even live with the prince of CF, Michael Crews. Yeah, it’s pretty sweet.
So Mike and I have had a bit of trouble in our new town house: No running water when we first moved in, the electricity was turned off (keep in mind it is literally 115 degrees at the time), no parking spot, no pool key, unsure which mailbox was ours out of 132. Needless to say there were a few kinks to work out. The latest one was the suspicion and confirmation of a mouse. I had noticed a mouse’s “leavings” around the kitchen and was hoping that they were there before we moved in or had been shaken loose somehow. One night not much later I hear a rustle next to me. And at 4:45am I wake up, look at the trash can directly next to my head to see a mouse head popping out. Needless to say I was scared/pissed. What I like to call “scissed”. I managed to scare it out of the room and block my door with towels so it couldn’t squeeze under again. Anything I felt that night, as I lie awake, I thought was the mouse. The next day, after not returning to sleep, I bought four mouse traps, set them up in very strategic places and within 24 hours…..I killed the turd. Something about laying traps and an animal falling for my tricks makes me feel good. I’ve also been working on some art. Maybe I’ll post about that another time, but for now that is all.
Your homework: Comment about a time you were “scissed”.

Tom’s Shoes #1
September 27, 2007Tom’s shoes have been recently nominated to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. They are currently in first place. They are up against some great designs, like the iPhone and the Tesla Roadster (it’s a car) . I just think it is interesting that such a simple design is winning in a design contest because of the cause that it stands for. What does this say about consumerism? Are people really becoming conscious consumers?

Another Way Of Doing Life
September 26, 2007If you’ve read The Irresitable Revolution by Shane Claiborne, there’s more to the book. It’s the newly released 5th Chapter. Shane has put up a link to a PDF of the additional chapter.
I know this book changed my life, and I’m looking forward to reading the 5th Chapter. For those of you who read it, post your thoughts on here.
Here’s a direct link to the PDF: http://www.thesimpleway.org/shane/sampler.pdf

Chi-city y’all
September 24, 2007so James a while back has proposed we come to chicago to visit him sometime this fall. If its ok with him I propose we find a time where most of us go for one terrific, dancy, road-trip, inside joke-filled weekend. Bryan, I know you just got back, but perhaps you’d want to go again in a month? We could make it an annual tradition if James stays in Chicago…
